Dream Chaser: Jamie Ackerman
Owner of Broken Needle Designs. A pattern maker and seamstress who currently does freelance work for individuals and companies.
What inspired you to start?
I have sewn for years and every time I would buy a pattern for myself I would need to make a lot of adjustments for it to fit right. Sometimes I would get it right and sometimes it would go horribly wrong and I would end up scraping the whole project. That is when I began searching out classes and ways to become more knowledgeable about how patterns worked. I soon found out I was not alone in this. It quickly became my passion to help others with their fit problems. I enjoy what I do and look forward to growing my business and helping others to be comfortable and look great everyday!
What challenges have you faced pursuing your dream?
One of the biggest challenges I have had is trying to start a business, go to school, take care of a family, and heal from chronic illness at the same time. When I first started to pursue my dream I had just been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Sjogren’s syndrome. I was in a lot of pain all the time and knew staying at home in bed was not going to help me get better. I found a new life when I discovered my passion, it renewed me and helped me overcome so many challenges.
What motivates you to pursue your dream?
My family most of all. I have an amazing husband who has been so supportive! I also love being able to inspire my kids, because they see me work so hard they work harder. My son has autism, and he blows me away with how hard he works to overcome adversity, do well in school and follow his dream to become a video game designer. My daughter is a gymnast and a straight A student. She is constantly interested in college and how to be an Olympic gymnast, and I love to hear her talk about all the things she loves and wants to work hard to achieve. It makes my heart smile and gives me the drive I need to succeed.
How do you define success?
I have already achieved success by my standards. Just to be able to do what I love everyday is more than I could have possibly imagined 3 years ago. Everything else is just a bonus!
Whats the best advice you have received?
To just start, set goals that are achievable, and don’t sweat the small stuff. Each day has enough trouble of it’s own so take care of today first and worry about tomorrow. . . . tomorrow!
Tell me about your proudest achievement?
Believe it or not my proudest moment has nothing to do with my business. It is the day I found my savior Jesus Christ, because that is the day my life changed forever and the sky truly became the limit. I have learned so much about following my dreams and Jesus at the same time. He makes all of this possible for me!
Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Honestly I don’t look that far ahead. I have learned to live each day to the fullest with no promise of tomorrow. I keep my goals achievable by keeping them short and attainable. So the best answer I can give is that my current goal is to have my website brokenneedledesigns.com up and running in 6 months. I hope for it to allow me to be able to branch out and better serve a larger audience. I plan to offer customizable patterns where design features are interchangeable, and fit can be achieved with minimal adjusting. I plan to do this by allowing customers to send me their measurements via my website along with specific pictures so I can make them a pattern that fits.
